BYCAP Tour Fall 2005
BYCAP Students from Baker City enjoyed a gold mining tour of Bourne in the mountains above Sumpter, Oregon. CCMM President Nils Christensen conducted the tour. Gold mining history class is in session for students sitting on a hillside just below an old mine shaft as Nils Christensen speaks about gold mines in the area. Students were able to walk through the area where the town of Bourne once stood. Nils pointed out where buildings once stood, the location of historic mines, and what life was like for gold miners during the famous Sumpter gold rush.

The Monighan
After a chilly early morning in Bourne, the Baker City students enjoyed spending their afternoon at the Monighan where the sun made a warm appearance. Nils Christensen introduced the Monighan to the students and described how the heavy duty dragline machine was used to find gold in the Sumpter Valley. The students were surprised when they learned that the historic Monighan will once again roar to life when it makes its journey down to the museum in Sumpter.
