Welcome to Gold Mining in Sumpter Oregon and........
The Cracker Creek Museum of Mining!
The Sumpter Valley has a rich gold mining
heritage and culture that runs as deep as the
gold vein that has lured gold miners to Sumpter
for 150 years with dreams of striking it big
and dates back to the gold rush of 1862!
Evidence, scars, remains, and left-over
machines of gold mining can still be seen
throughout the Sumpter valley and
surrounding mountains in many forms.
Many of the old tools and machines used to dig
for gold are available for viewing down at the
Cracker Creek Museum of Mining
Gold Mining is still prevalent in the Sumpter
area, and though the tools are different, gold
miners are still chasing that magic golden dream today! The Cracker Creek Museum of Mining, is located
on the East side of the Sumpter Highway, just South of the Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge and next to the
Sumpter Snowmobile Club Grooming Shed, and was formed to maintain a part of mining heritage:
placer mining equipment and tools. Since its inception, the mission of our museum has been:
the restoration, preservation, interpretation and display of historical artifacts representing the mining
heritage and culture of Sumpter, Oregon and the surrounding areas.
