heritage and culture that runs as deep as the gold vein that has lured gold miners to Sumpter for 150 years with dreams of striking it big and dates back to the gold rush of 1862! Evidence, scars, remains, and left-over machines of gold mining can still be seen throughout the Sumpter valley and surrounding mountains in many forms. Many of the old tools and machines used to dig for gold are available for viewing down at the Cracker Creek Museum of Mining Gold Mining is still prevalent in the Sumpter area, and though the tools are different, gold miners are still chasing that magic golden dream today! The Cracker Creek Museum of Mining, is located on the East side of the Sumpter Highway, just South of the Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge and next to the Sumpter Snowmobile Club Grooming Shed, and was formed to maintain a part of mining heritage: placer mining equipment and tools.
